About Jean Schlumberger
Jean Schlumberger began what would be a storied career as a jewelry designer by creating unique buttons, and later costume jewelry for Elsa Shiaparelli in the 1930s. After World War II he opened his own jewelry salon, but he’s mainly known for his work as a designer for Tiffany & Co., where he created jewelry from 1956 until his retirement in 1970.
As one of only four designers that Tiffany has allowed to sign their work, Schlumberger created jewelry that reflected his personal interpretations of natural forms, and the pieces he fashioned soon attracted an impressive list of clients. Royal patrons included the Duchess of Windsor, and Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, and his work was also favored by Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, and most famously, Jacqueline Kennedy. The first lady wore so many of Schlumberger’s bracelets they came to be known as “Jackie bracelets.”
Drawing Inspiration from the flora and fauna of the natural world, many of Jean Schlumberger pieces were based on insects, flowers, butterflies, and the flowing lines vines like morning glory and honeysuckle. He also created his own interpretations of sea creatures, whimsical creations that included caricatured fish, starfish, seahorses and more. His use of colored stones like peridot, amethyst, and pink sapphires combined with intricate detail brought his unique designs to life.
Today, Jean Schlumberger’s impact on jewelry design at Tiffany & Co. is seen in a number of Schlumberger inspired collections. The Enamel Bracelets collection includes the signature style that has remained famous for over 50 years. Boldly colored enamel with gold vertical highlights define the bangles, but the collection also includes rings and earrings inspired by the style. The Sixteen Stone Collection of rings is a Schlumberger inspired design that features a precious metal “X” between every other stone in an eternity style setting, and the Egg Charm collection takes its inspiration from Schlumberger’s egg pendants from the 1960s.Get a Cash Offer Now
