About Paulding Farnham
Paulding Farnham was a sculptor and jeweler who is best known for his work for Tiffany and Company in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Widely recognized as the creative genius behind Tiffany’s great successes at the Paris Expositions of 1889 and 1900, Paulding Farnham’s enameled and bejeweled orchid brooches helped establish Tiffany as a leader in jewelry design.
Farnham was born in New York City in 1859, and began his apprenticeship at Tiffany in 1879. His first work was a life-sized gold and yellow chrysanthemum brooch, a theme that carried through his next creative project: creating orchid brooches for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. The brooches were crafted into precise replicas of a variety of orchids using unannealed silver coated with blended enamels accented with pearls and gemstones. The work met with universal acclaim and won an unprecedented six gold medals. Farnham’s other work at the Exposition was inspired by Native American designs, Louis XIV, XV, and XI fashions, and East-Indian jewelry.
After the 1889 triumph in Paris, Farnham continued to produce more orchid brooches for the private market in New York, and was promoted to the head of the jewelry department at Tiffany in 1891. His work during this period included a number of import commissions, most notably the famous Belmont Cup and the Adams Vase.
The Paris Exposition of 1900 was another success for Tiffany and Farnham, whose work in conjunction with gemologist George Frederick Kunz featured a wide array of colored stones, including a life-sized iris brooch with sapphires, topaz, and garnets inset in platinum. In 1902 Farnham was removed from the leadership at the firm when Louis Comfort Tiffany was assigned as design director. Farnham resigned in 1908 and moved west, focusing on sculpting and painting until his death in 1927.
