About Buccellati

The house of Buccellati is a highly respected creator of fine jewelry based in Milan, Italy. Their works feature techniques that highlight their thoroughly Italian history, including elements ranging from the Roman Empire to the Renaissance.

Known primarily for the intricate textures of their pieces, Buccellati prides itself on producing items with “no untouched gold.” One of the most distinctive techniques used is their signature “Rigato” engraving—extremely intricate, hand-engraved stripes that give precious metals the appearance of silk fabric. Other techniques Buccellati employs include piercing and cutting that simulate the look of lace, linen, or tulle.

When gemstones are used, Buccellati generally chooses the unusual: large cabochons, carved emeralds, and even “baroque pearls.” Inspiration for their jewelry is drawn from nature, including animals, flower petals, and garlands, as well as the art and architecture of historic Italian Renaissance sculptors, painters, and architects.

Founded in Milan in 1919 by Mario Buccellati, success came quickly to the jeweler, including patronage from the royal family of Spain. Four of Mario’s five sons joined the family business, and the company expanded, eventually becoming the first Italian jewelry designer with a location on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Old world artistry continued to be passed from father to son, with Gianmaria Buccellati leading the company into the 21st century. Today, Buccellati is still a family affair—Gianmaria’s son Andrea heads the company, and Andrea’s daughter Lucretia is the first female designer of the House.
