About Chaumet Jewelry
Chaumet is a luxury jeweler and watchmaker known throughout its long history for its high quality, hand-made jewelry and personal attention to detail. Now part of the Louis Vuitton-Moet Hennessy conglomerate, Chaumet produces high-end jewelry and watches for markets throughout the world, particularly in France, Japan, and China.
Founded in 1780 by Marie-Étienne Nitot, the house’s early work included pieces for aristocratic clientele, most notably a commission for the coronation crown for Napoleon. A tiara created for the Empress Josephine began a trend throughout the court, and Nitot became known as the “jeweler of the tiara,” constructing headbands made of leaves, fruit, and garlands of flowers for the aristocracy and its imitators.
Nitot’s son ran the company until it was sold to shop foreman Jean Baptiste Fossin, whose works inspired by the Italian Renaissance continued to appeal to the aristocratic elite. A London boutique of the house was founded after the French revolution of 1848, run by Jean-Valentin Morel, who later became official supplier of jewelry to Queen Victoria.
In 1885, Joseph Chaumet married into the Morel family, lending his name to the business. His works included Renaissance style pieces, particularly tiaras that were in fashion at the time, as well as pieces inspired by Japanese traditions. Joseph’s son Marcel Chaumet took over in 1928, and the House of Chaumet became a leader in the Art Deco movement.
Chaumet designs today continue to be inspired by naturalistic motifs, from rings and necklaces of leaves and grasses to their iconic bee themed pieces. Bee pendants and brooches mix vibrant colored garnets, sapphires, and topazes with diamonds and pearls in hand-made excellence.
