About David Webb
David Webb’s jewelry designs are known for their bold use of color, and his enamel jewelry, often featuring animal themes, was much beloved by the most famous Hollywood socialites, especially in the 1960s and 70s. His prominent use of gold in the early 1970s was trend setting, and he was often quoted as saying, “The more ancient or barbaric, the better.”
Born in Asheville, North Carolina in 1925, David Webb was a mostly self-taught designer who learned metal-smithing techniques as an apprentice at his uncle’s silversmith shop. He moved to New York at age 17 and, with wealthy socialite Antionette Quilleret, opened a shop in 1945. A pair of Webb’s earrings was featured on the cover of Vogue magazine in 1950, announcing the young jeweler as a new force in the Manhattan jewelry world.
Seeking inspiration from the animal world, Webb’s jewelry is generally distinguished by striking colors, voluminous dimension, and a fine attention to detail. Designs featuring enamel frogs, crocodiles, zebras, and dragons often mixed carved crystal with diamonds, pearls, and semi-precious stones in colorful counterpoint. Also inspired by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, Webb’s designs combined modern materials to reinterpret classic themes.
Webb’s work is famously associated with socialites and movie stars, from Lana Turner and Ava Gardner to Princess Grace of Monaco and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Elizabeth Taylor devoted four pages of her photo book, “My Love Affair with Jewelry” to Webb’s designs.
David Webb died of pancreatic cancer in in 1975, but not before leaving an influential legacy, including thousands of sketches. Reproductions of his work continue to be created in the workshop above the Madison Avenue store.
