About Panerai

The Italian watch brand Panerai is famous for its distinctive line of watches based on the company’s early association with the Royal Italian Navy. Officially known as “Officine Panerai,” the firm now enjoys a kind of cult following—they have a devoted group of fanatic patrons known as the “Paneristis.”

Founded in Florence in 1860 by Guido Panerai, the family enterprise initially made precision nautical instruments, and secured numerous patents for optical devices and watches. In 1916, Panerai developed the luminous substance “Radiomir,” a radium-based powder that illuminated the dials of instruments.

Just before the beginning of World War II, Panerai was commissioned by the Italian Navy to design a tough diving watch—the “Panerai Radiomir.” Equipped with a Rolex movement, the original Radiomir was a full 47 mm in diameter, and featured illuminated, easy to read numerals, a large, cushion-shaped steel case, and welded wire lugs. Though only 350 were produced, the Radiomir would have a profound effect on the Panerai of today.

Panerai continued to make watches for military applications throughout the 20th century, including the Mare Nostrum, made specifically for deck officers, and Radiomir Egiziano for the Egyptian Navy. The highly radioactive Radiomir was eventually replaced by Luminor, and Panerai finally offered its watches for public sale in 1993. Limited editions of the Luminor, the Luminor Marina, and the Mare Nostrum sold well and eventually became luxurious cult objects.

Panerai was taken over by the Vendôme Group in 1997, which later merged with the luxury goods group Richemont. The company has invested steadily in its manufacturing of in-house movements, and is now a leader in the luxury sport watch industry.

Diamond Estate Jewelry Buyers isn’t only the best place to sell a Panerai watch, we also are the best way to sell a Breitling watch for a generous cash offer.
