About Tudor Watches

The Tudor watch company was created by the legendary Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, in 1926. His goal was to establish a company that could offer a watch “at a more modest price than our Rolex watches…yet one that would attain the standard of dependability for which Rolex is famous.” While the Tudor brand in its early days was decidedly the “little brother” of Rolex, its presence today is strong. And with its recent re-introduction into the United States market, Tudor continues to capitalize on its fine pedigree.

The biggest difference between Rolex watches and Tudor watches, besides price, is in the movement. All Rolex watches feature movements manufactured in-house by Rolex itself, which are found in no other watches. Tudor watches contain Swiss movements built by ETA, a manufacturer owned by the Swatch group. While these movements are high quality and reliable, with some of the newer ones attaining the coveted COSC certification, they are more commonly found, and therefore not as valuable as Rolex movements.

Historically, Tudor watches have gotten their market share based not only on their relationship with Rolex, but by reputation for durability and their connection to sport. In 1952, Tudor introduced two of Rolex’s great advancements: the self-winding perpetual ‘rotor’ mechanism, and the waterproof oyster case. The Tudor Oyster Prince was subsequently used by 26 members of a British Royal Navy expedition to north Greenland, proving its strength, precision, and reliability in the harsh environment.

Another early Tudor advertising campaign touted the Oyster Prince’s durability and ‘robustness,’ citing the watch’s use by coal miners, high steel metal girder workers, and motorcycle racers. In 1954, Tudor’s Oyster Prince Submariner was introduced, and quickly became the watch of choice for professional divers. The many iterations of the Tudor Submariner cemented the brands legacy with sports watch aficionados.

Today’s Tudor watches continue to cash in on their affiliation with Rolex and their historical connection to sports, adventure, and an active lifestyle. Tudor’s Heritage Collection is a loving nod to its own past, and includes the Black Bay series of timepieces, celebrating 60 years of Tudor diving watches. Featuring their in-house produced Manufacture Calibre movements, the Black Bay watches capture the look of the past with contemporary technology and classic style.

Tudor’s Heritage Chrono is similarly inspired by the iconic Oysterdate Chronograph of the 1970s, a modern take on the classic timepiece.

The Tool Watch line includes the North Flag, a watch inspired by the North Greenland expedition of the 1950s, and Tudor’s Pelagos watch, which is touted as “the most complete traditional mechanical diver’s watch available today.” The racing inspired Fastrider Chrono and Fastrider Black Shield round out the tool watch line, with both featuring sporty lines, matte finishes, and sandblasted details.

Finally, Tudor offers its Classic Collection, which includes the Style line, reminiscent of the aesthetics of watches from the 1950s to the 1970s; the Glamour line, with retro-chic style; the feminine Clair De Rose line; and Tudor’s Classic line, a group of refined and subtle watches suitable for all occasions.
