About The House of Fabergé
Fabergé was a famous Russian jewelry firm of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Though still in existence today, the firm is best known for its exquisite enameling and iconic Imperial Easter Eggs from the years before the Russian Revolution.
Founded in 1842 in St. Petersburg by Gustav Fabergé, the firm rose to prominence under the direction of Gustav’s son, Peter Carl Fabergé, who joined the business in 1861. After an apprenticeship with Gustav’s partner and a ‘grand tour’ that included studying manufacture and design in London, Italy, and France, Carl assumed creative control over the firm in 1871. His interest in French design and historical revival was rewarded with a gold medal at the 1882 Pan-Russian exhibition in St. Petersburg.
By the turn of the century, Fabergé had switched its focus from jewelry to objets d’art, specializing in carved animal miniatures and bejewelled flowers as well as functional items like letter openers, boxes, and vases. The quality of the work during this period is illustrated by fine technical expertise and attention to the smallest detail. Every piece produced by the firm’s craftsmen was approved by Carl Fabergé himself—any small imperfection would result in rejection.
During this period, Fabergé produced its most famous work: the iconic Imperial Easter Eggs. Originally commissioned by Tsar Alexander III as a gift for his wife, the 54 eggs Fabergé went on to produce for the Imperial Crown have been recognized as masterpieces in miniature. The quality of the enameling is widely considered to be the best of all time.
