About Bell & Ross Watches
Bell & Ross timepieces were originally conceived by a team of design specialists with the singular goal of creating time keeping instruments perfectly suited for use by professional aviators. The shared drive of this small group of watch designers and aeronautical control panel specialists was to craft timepieces in the great Swiss watchmaking tradition that were capable of meeting the extreme demands of the aviator’s environment.
Originally founded in 1992, the brand’s first watches were constructed by German watchmaker Sinn, but Bell & Ross began to independently manufacture their timepieces in 2002 at their Swiss facility in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
With the goal of creating watches specifically suited to extreme conditions, the company has operated under the simple maxim, “function shapes form” since the outset. As a result of staying true to their founding principles, Bell & Ross is a top choice for those in the utilitarian “tool watch” market, especially pilots, divers, astronauts, and bomb disposal experts. A brief list of particular watches explains their popularity.
In 1994, Bell and Ross solidified their reputation with aviators by re-issuing the Space 1 watch. With the movement provided by Sinn, Bell & Ross revisioned German astronaut Reinhart Furrer’s watch, the first automatic chronometer ever worn in space. The result was a watch that captured the imagination of aviators everywhere, and remains popular today.
The team at Bell & Ross developed the Bell & Ross Bomb Disposal Type watch in 1996, and the watch was almost immediately pressed into service by the bomb disposal arm of the French Security Services. With an anti-magnetic case and Bell & Ross’s signature legibility, reliability, and precision, the watch met with both professional and public success.
Their most famous and rugged dive watch, the HydroMax, was introduced in 1997, and won recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records for functioning at the phenomenal depth of 11,000 meters below sea level.
With so many extreme watches to their credit, Bell & Ross has been able to successfully build out their brand beyond their professional appeal. The timepieces offered today have evolved from those first aviation inspired models into a full line of watches that live up to the four key design principles of their history: legibility, functionality, reliability, and precision. Separated into three collections (Vintage, Instruments, and Experimental), the watches at Bell & Ross represent a wider variety than ever before, though still in keeping with their rugged roots.
The Vintage collection features a selection of pocket watches, as well as the military inspired WW2 Regulateur and Tourbillon models. Within the Vintage collection are 16 models, perhaps the most conventional looking timepieces Bell & Ross offers. The Instruments collection captures the look of the aviation instruments that inspired Bell & Ross’s original timepieces, with iconic square cases.
Finally, the Experimental collection lives up to its name, with everything from the BR-X1 Carbone Forge (a skeletonized chronograph with a Carbone Forge and titanium case) to the BR-X2 Tourbillon Micro Rotor (a 99 piece limited edition that features the BR-CAL. 380 automatic mechanical movement with a flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock and metal applique Superluminova-filled hands and indices).
